What is STEM Summer Bridge?

Our STEM Summer Bridge Program is going to be a one(1) week long orientation program that provides EOP STEM freshman with the tools necessary to navigate a successful transition to Cal Poly HUmboldt. As an SBO participant, you will have the opportunity to connect with other incoming EOP freshmen & EOP staff, you will receive advising & mentoring, and the chance to familiarize yourself with Humboldt and the surrounding area. 

When you participate in STEM Summer Bridge you will have the opportunity:

  • To get hands on learning and lab experience from the beginning in Botany and Chemistry
  • Shave down the rough edges of transitioning into a college level STEM curriculum at Cal Poly Humboldt
  • Become familiar with the various programs utilized at Cal Poly like Google (calendar/docs/drive/gmail/etc.), Excel, and Canvas
  • Recognize academic excellence as it exceeds beyond just GPA and scores
  • Develop financial literacy and refine your study skills for English and Math
  • Receive a Laptop to use for your academics-You can borrow this for your full time at Cal Poly Humboldt but you must return them every fall, spring, and summer break
  • Introduce the cultural significance in STEM and build authentic connections to yourself, others, and academia at large by exploring concepts in STEM as they relate to who you are and what you value
  • Develop practices to enhance individualized strategies for note-taking, retrieval, and self-testing techniques through reflection, sharing, discussion, and activity
  • Learn how to become a self-advocate when it comes to your long & short term professional and academic endeavors by getting acquainted with major and career exploration within STEM at Cal Poly Humboldt

The following workshops are scheduled for and make up the entire week of STEM Summer Bridge:

  4. Life Sciences Lecture

  5. Life Sciences Lab

  6. EOP Activity 

  7. Math lab

  8. Academic Excellence

  9. Physical Sciences Lecture

  10. Physical Sciences Lab

  11. Financial Literacy

  12. Intro to Canvas

By the end of the week, you will have familiarized yourself with the microscope (how to use it and properly identify the different components and aspects), successfully navigate Canvas, develop better financial direction, get exposure to leadership organizations, learn skills that will aid you during your english and math experiences as a STEM major, recall the best techniques for drawing, illustrating, and taking college-level photos for studying and finding credible stock photos for studying, identify strategies to accurately label structures and organisms, and understand the most effective ways to navigate lecture and lab spaces so that the maximum amount of content is acquired. 

When does it start?

STEM SBO Check in will be: August 6th, 2023 at 1:00pm

All STEM EOP students are required to check-in for STEM Summer Bridge

STEM EOP Early Housing Check-in: August 6th, 2023 between 8:00am - 12:00pm (noon)

Please check-in @ the Jolly Giant Commons (JGC) Recreation Room, 1st floor.  Please park in LOTS G1 & R2 off of LK Wood Blvd. & Granite Ave. A parking permit is required for the day and will be provided at check-in. campus map

EOP Welcome & Family Orientation: August 6th, 2022 at 1:15pm - 2:45pm

We encourage you and your family/guests to attend in order to meet EOP staff, other EOP students and their parents! Your family/guests are more than welcome to help you move in, and participate in the Parent Orientation that will be offered in English & Spanish, however, they cannot attend other Summer Bridge Orientation activities.

All EOP students in the following majors are required to attend:

  • Environmental Science & Management 
  • Fisheries 
  • Forestry 
  • Geology
  • Marine Biology
  • Oceanography 
  • Physics 
  • Rangeland Resource Science 
  • Wildlife
  • Zoology

All EOP STEM freshmen are required to attend STEM Summer Bridge Orientation and will also participate in other Orientation activities required by the university. Participation in STEM SBO is mandatory. Please note: STEM SBO workshops and activities typically run from 8 am ‒5 pm. If you are a student living off-campus and/or are working, you must make prior arrangements regarding your work schedule or family obligations.

What does it cost to attend?

STEM SBO is provided at NO COST. However, you may be charged for some lodging & meals, please read below:

ON-CAMPUS students Your lodging & meals will be covered by the program until Housing’s “move-in-day”. From that date on, you are responsible for covering your own lodging & meals. This is included in your housing contract. 

OFF-CAMPUS students, your meals will be provided for the duration of the Summer Bridge Program. 

What are your travel plans? 

Whether you are arriving by bus or plane, we will be happy to provide you with resources to find your way to campus. Please let us know as soon as possible whether you will be driving up with family or friends*, arriving by bus on AMTRAK or Greyhound, or by plane on United Airlines, American Airlines or Avelo.
*Parents & family are not allowed to stay on campus in the Residence Halls and must find their own lodging accommodations.

ON-CAMPUS students: Students planning to live on campus may move-in during designated hours for EOP Early Housing Check-inHow and when will you be arriving? We’d like to know, please call or email us!

OFF-CAMPUS students: We’d still like to know how & when you will be arriving but no need to check-in until the first day of Summer Bridge Orientation.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
  • Admitted EOP students must sign-up for Summer Bridge Orientation by May 1.

We are a first come first served program, please don’t risk the chance of being placed on a wait list.

In order to be eligible for June Registration, you must complete the following:

  • Accept your admission to Humboldt before May 1.
  • Sign-up for Summer Bridge Orientation before May 1.

March 1: On-Campus Housing Applications are available starting at 4 pm. Secure your spot! Apply at: www.humboldt.edu/housing/apply

Please note: Housing is assigned on a first-come/first-served basis and is determined by the date you complete the application. 

April: Financial Aid Awards are posted...check your STUDENT CENTER (SC)!

May 1: Intent to Enroll Deadline ‒ Accept your admission to Humboldt in your SC! 

May 1: Deadline to sign-up for Summer Bridge Orientation

June : Registration for Fall classes 
Please note: In order to be eligible, you must accept your admission to Humboldt (by 5/1) & sign-up for Summer Bridge Orientation (by 5/1).

August 7th-18th : Summer Bridge Orientation 

August 23 : 1st day of instruction 

Sign Up for Summer Bridge 2023 by logging-in to myHumboldt, click on the Student Center icon, then click on the orientation link under the Admissions section.
