What is STEM Summer Bridge?

Our STEM Summer Bridge Program is going to be a one(1) week long orientation program that provides EOP STEM freshman with the tools necessary to navigate a successful transition to Cal Poly HUmboldt. As an SBO participant, you will have the opportunity to connect with other incoming EOP freshmen & EOP staff, you will receive advising & mentoring, and the chance to familiarize yourself with Humboldt and the surrounding area.

When you participate in STEM Summer Bridge you will have the opportunity:

  • Shave down the rough edges of transitioning into a college level STEM curriculum at Cal Poly Humboldt

  • Introduce the cultural significance in STEM and build authentic connections to yourself, others, and academia at large by exploring concepts in STEM as they relate to who you are and what you value

  • Become familiar with the various programs and platforms utilized at Cal Poly like Google (calendar/docs/drive/gmail/etc.), Excel, and Canvas

  • Recognize academic excellence as it exceeds beyond just GPA and scores

  • Develop best practices for Physical and Life science courses and refine your study skills for English and Math

  • To get hands on learning and lab experience from the beginning in Botany and Chemistry

  • Develop practices to enhance individualized strategies for note-taking, retrieval, and self-testing techniques through reflection, sharing, discussion, and activity

  • Learn how to become a self-advocate when it comes to your long & short term professional and academic endeavors by getting acquainted with major and career exploration within STEM at Cal Poly Humboldt

  • Receive a laptop to use for your academics. You can borrow this for your full time at Cal Poly Humboldt but you must return them every fall, spring, and summer break

The following workshops are scheduled for and make up the entire week of STEM Summer Bridge:

  1. Intro to Google

  2. Intro to Excel

  3. Scientific Communication

  4. Life Sciences (Botany) Lecture

  5. Life Sciences (Botany) Lab

  6. EOP Activity
